So are Stephen Ulrich and several other Kentucky residents.Why? Because they’ve all loved somebody who died by suicide, and they all know suicide is a preventable public health problem. These Kentuckians also realize that if they don’t step-up and try to help others, there will be many more senseless deaths like the ones that have touched their lives.Mark and Stephen are working to end the silence and stigma that a suicide death often brings. They’re part of a new campaign the Kentucky Suicide Prevention Group (KSPG) is launching called “Let’s Talk: Kentuckians Affected by Suicide End the Silence.” |

July 15, 2008 - As younger and more kids get their hands on cellphone and digital cameras and nearly ubiquitous high-speed Internet connections, cyberbullying is ramping up and taking new forms. No longer are threats, taunts and insults relegated to the written word in chat rooms and instant messages. Now teens, children and sometimes adults are adding pictures and videos to their bullying arsenal and posting them on sites such as MySpace, Facebook and YouTube, where anyone can see them. read more>>
June 10, 2008 - The "Jeffrey Johnston Stand Up For All Students Act " (Florida House Bill 669) was signed by Gov. Charlie Crist. Jeff Johnston died by suicide in 2005 after enduring more than two years of cyberbullying. The bill requires every Florida school district to develop anti-bullying policies that include punishment and counseling for students who bully their peers. The bill also covers cyberbullying, or harassment that occurs through the Internet or text messages. Jeff's mom, Debbie, has shown enormous strength in turning her grief into action and seeing that the bill became law after three years. June 6, 2008 - The Louisiana State Legislature sent to Gov. Bobby Jindal's desk a bill, HB 719 , that would require the development and adoption of guidelines for in-service training in suicide prevention. It would also require the adoption of rules to require that all public school teachers, school counselors, and principals participate annually in at least two hours of in-service training in suicide prevention. Congrats to SPAN USA's Field Liaison for Louisiana's 5th Congressional District, Teddi McGehee, who worked hard along with The Jason Foundation and individuals in Louisiana's Office of Mental Health on the bill. May 21, 2008 - A suicide prevention coalition was formed in Bullitt County, KY. Twenty people gathered at Ridgway Memorial Library for the first suicide prevention forum to discuss the topic in the community.
